This is the largest and highest salt lake in the world, covering 12,000 square kilometers, twice the size of the Great Salt Lake in the United States. It resembles an impressive, overwhelming, and solitary white ocean; the bright blue skies contrast with the dazzling white salt crust, and in the rainy season, the lake is covered with a thin layer of water that adds a surreal experience. Inside this sea of salt are islands with giant cacti.
This spectacular natural attraction is a five-hour drive from Potosí, a six-hour drive from Oruro, and a seven-hour train ride from Oruro.
To the south of the Salar, towards Chile, is the Avaroa National Park, which boasts some of the world’s most beautiful and strange landscapes. It is empty and desolate but has multicolored lagoons brimming with birdlife.
