Chutillos Feast

(Last weekend of August)

Also known as fiesta de San Bartolomé, it is held in Potosí in the nearby village of La Puerta. A classic blend of Catholic and indigenous traditions feast blended to a point where they are indistinguishable from one another. It is the celebration of Saint Bartolome victory over Umphumuna, a native evil spirit who had kidnapped the sun and, held it hostage in a cave. Participants visit the cave and thousands of parades and activities take place in the city throughout the month of August. There are processions, student exhibitions, traditional costumes and folk dancing by people from all over the country.
